I would add that a critical aspect of the "assimilate" phase is taking time to listen and observe. Too often, executives new to a position and organization (and their leadership) push themselves to "demonstrate impact" from day one. Taking time to listen inside the organization, and observe the workings of people and teams, is essential to success.
